Richard C. Southard, Esq.

Former Undefeated Prosecutor with Excellent Trial Record

Guest Commentator, Court TV, Fox News Channel, ABC News Now

Prior to starting up his own law firm in October 2003, Mr. Southard served as Criminal Court Deputy Bureau Chief and prosecutor in one of the largest and busiest urban prosecutor's offices in the nation. The Kings County District Attorney's Office serves a widely diverse community of 2.5 million persons. Its case volume – more than 100,000 prosecutions a year – is larger than the annual case volume of several states.

Since joining the Brooklyn DA's office in October 1996 fresh out of Brooklyn Law School (where he studied trial advocacy under Brooklyn District Attorney, Charles J. Hynes), Mr. Southard has flawlessly prosecuted his share of violent crime (homicide, rape, robbery and felony assault).

Additionally, he has also conducted training programs for NYPD recruits in courtroom testimony and has personally supervised/trained over 50 junior assistant DAs. His love of the law was passed along to 5th grade students at three different elementary schools, where he took part in the School Advocacy Program which gives basic instruction in criminal law concepts.

Mr. Southard appears regularly as a guest commentator on Catherine Crier Live, Both Sides, Trial Heat, Courtside, and Open Court for Court TV as well as having appeared numerous times on Fox News Channel as a legal analyst discussing such high profile cases as the Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Martha Stewart, and Scott Peterson cases. He has also appeared as a legal analyst for ABC News Now. He credits his sales and sales management background prior to law school with teaching him the “art of persuasion.”

Mr. Southard opened up his law office in 2003 in lower Manhattan but has handled cases in all five boroughs, Westchester, Nassau and Albany counties. Mr. Southard believes that every case deserves his personal attention and instead of assigning work to be handled by paralegals or attorneys with minimal experience. He stays abreast of the latest criminal defense strategies bay participating in many Continuing Legal Education courses.

Mr. Southard is also an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he teaches Courtroom Communication Skills. In late 2011, Mr. Southard started a blog where users can submit legal questions which Mr. Southard will answer for free.
