Although Mr. Coltrane has only been licensed to practice law for a mere 26 months, he has already managed to solidify himself as one of the premiere Criminal Defense attorneys in the great State of Michigan. As one of the youngest, if not the youngest attorney to ever be awarded a coveted spot in The National Trial Lawyers Top 40 Under 40, (based on experience, not biological age), Mr. Coltrane constantly strives to prove that excellence in the law isn’t something that is simply acquired by achieving longevity in your career; it’s more than that. Excellence is earned, not handed out based upon the number of years someone has been actively practicing. It’s derived from, and championed by, countless hours in the courtroom, putting in the extra hours when everyone else calls it quits, and maintaining unwavering dedication not only to your clients, but to your commitment to continuing legal education as well. It’s not necessarily the smartest attorney who achieves success in the courtroom, it’s the attorney who is the most prepared to go to battle. After graduating from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in January of 2014, passing the February 2014 Michigan Bar Exam and subsequently passing the July 2014 Pennsylvania Bar Exam, Mr. Coltrane took those aforementioned traits and began a job with a firm in Northern Michigan specializing in Criminal Defense and Complex Civil Litigation. When asked about the work environment, the only phrase that came to his mind was “baptism by fire. Within six months he was conducting his first solo Capital offense jury trial. His client, who was on trial for Criminal Sexual Conduct charges stemming from an alleged rape, only had one person standing between him and a 20 year stent in MDOC. It was at that moment Mr. Coltrane realized he was doing exactly what he was put on this earth to do. After a multi-day trial, and a grueling 5 hour deliberation, Mr. Coltrane’s client heard the two words that he was afraid weren’t coming…NOT GUILTY. Since that time, Mr. Coltrane has seemingly continued to charge ahead and keep the momentum going. He has successfully conducted and won numerous other trials and evidentiary hearings, he’s filed, argued and won countless suppression motions based upon violations of his client’s 4th amendment rights against illegal searches and seizures, sec. 4 and sec. 8 motions under the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, Motions to Quash for lack of information, OUI/OUID motions challenging field sobriety testing and much more.  He has handled all types of cases ranging from possession and use charges,(marijuana, narcotics, analogues, heroin, meth, etc.), domestic violence and other assault and battery based crimes, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault by strangulation, aggravated drug crimes consisting of charges such as maintaining a meth lab and manufacturing and delivering meth, manufacture and delivery over 50g and other charges based on differentiating drugs, OUI/OUID/Impaired driving, felony firearm charges, breaking and entering and home invasion, all types of larceny charges, embezzlement charges, and even Open Murder, which is set for trial at the end of the year. Simply put, Mr. Coltrane is well on his way to being synonymous with excellence in the law, but he won’t be the one to tell you that. If asked about his numerous successes in such a short period of time, he will be the first one to tell you that success comes from a continuing passion and love for the law, and the ability to dedicate your life to continuing the pursuit of justice. The law is ever changing and with that comes countless hours of research and doing your due diligence, even when it is the last thing you want to do that day. When asked for a final statement, Mr. Coltrane simply stated that he will do everything within his power to be a positive and productive member of the Top 40 Under 40, and that he will do his best to maintain the level of excellence associated with this organization.
