Andy Birrell is regarded by clients and adversaries as one of the best criminal defense lawyers in the State of Minnesota. He is the President of the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers an honor limited to the top 1% of lawyers in the State. He is a fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers - the highest professional honor for a criminal defense lawyer. He has been Chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association Criminal Law Certification Board and was the first lawyer in Minnesota to be certified by the Minnesota State Bar Association as a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist. For more than 30 years, he has been a Board Certified Criminal Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is a Member of the Million Dollar Advocate Forum. In addition to being selected as a perennial Super Lawyer, he has three times been named one of Minnesota’s Top 100 Super Lawyers. He is one of the executive officers of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, serving as Treasurer, is the 8th Circuit Coordinator of the NACDL Lawyer’s Strike Force. The Minnesota Supreme Court appointed Andy to the Advisory Committee on Rules of Criminal Procedure.
Mr. Birrell represents clients in all phases of criminal law and related matters from grand jury investigations, including the receipt of a target letter, through charges, pretrial proceedings, trial and appeals in federal and state courts throughout the United States. As to federal matters, he represents clients in the most significant and difficult criminal law matters, including those involving: RICO, money laundering, conspiracy, tax charges, mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, securities fraud, tax charges, identity fraud, public corruption charges, environmental offenses, national security offenses and other related allegations. As to state court matters, he represents clients charged with offenses ranging from murder to disorderly conduct and offenses in between.
Mr. Birrell is an accomplished and seasoned appellate lawyer. He has argued before the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., the Federal appeals court, and has won reversals of convictions and orders for new trials in the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.
A former prosecutor, Mr. Birrell contributes to his profession by regularly presenting seminars to lawyers on all aspects of federal and state criminal law and procedure and ethics.
