Education & Experience Gene graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with a degree in Corporate Communications. He then attended law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas and graduated in 2005. While in law school he participated in mock trial and moot court. It’s there that he caught the litigation bug. He was also an editor for South Texas’ International Trade Law Journal, Currents.
Gene started his legal career as a prosecutor in Travis County where he prosecuted hundreds of cases big and small. He served as a prosecutor from 2005 until 2007 when he left to become a criminal defense lawyer.
Gene is a board member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He’s also a member of the National Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Williamson County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Barbara Jordan Inn of Court.
Gene is a member of the Texas Bar College. From the Texas Bar College website: “The Texas Bar College is an honorary society of lawyers who are among the best trained attorneys in Texas. Members are qualified attorneys who are interested in both high ethical standards and improved training for all Texas attorneys. The College recognizes Texas lawyers who attend at least double the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) required by the State Bar of Texas.”
Tom Hanks once remarked that he could never be a lawyer because, “that’s doing homework for a living.” Gene prides himself on staying on top of the latest law and science. He lives by the motto, “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Gene is one of the few attorneys in the Central Texas area who is an affiliated attorney with the Armed Citizen’s Legal Defense Network. He is regularly called by members to answer questions and, in 2016, was able to successfully defend a homeowner who was no-billed by a grand jury after killing an home intruder. ACLDN wrote an article about the matter in their monthly newsletter: “The Network Track Record of Assistance to Members” (Jan. 2017)
