With more than eleven years of civil litigation experience, trial lawyer Luke R. Hertenstein provides insightful counsel to clients about their case and zealously advocates for their interests in court. Luke has handled cases in federal and state courts, at both the trial and appellate levels, and his trial successes include a $5 million jury verdict against a large corporation (please note that past results afford no guarantee of future results, and each case is different and is judged on its own merits). Luke has been recognized five times as a “Rising Star” in Civil Litigation by Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyers, following a selection process including peer evaluations to identify the top lawyers in Missouri and Kansas. Since joining the Hollis Law Firm in 2019, Luke has focused his practice on complex product liability litigation, representing individuals harmed by defective drugs and medical devices.

At high school in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, Luke excelled in many subjects but had a particular affinity for science and math. He was also active in his Boy Scout troop, earning the Eagle Scout award and serving in several troop leadership positions. In college, Luke pursued a pure liberal arts education, studying many subjects but majoring in philosophy. After college, Luke worked for several years as a computer consultant in Chicago, Illinois, before he eventually decided to pursue a legal career.

In law school, Luke studied many areas of the law to develop a broad foundation for his practice. He was a published staff member of both the UMKC Law Review and the Urban Lawyer legal journals, a competing member of UMKC’s ABA Negotiation Team, a law clerk with the Jackson County Family Court, and a recipient of a CALI award for excellence in legal writing. Luke also had the privilege of interning for a semester with the Honorable Ortrie D. Smith, United States District Judge for the Western District of Missouri.

Since law school, Luke’s practice has been 100% devoted to litigation. He worked for more than three years in a small, plaintiff-oriented firm, where he represented individuals harmed by discrimination and/or retaliation in the workplace. He then worked in a mid-sized firm for more than eight years, where his practice focused on business litigation, insurance defense matters, products liability, and representing individuals in employment-related disputes.

Luke frequently draws on his science and computer background in his cases, particularly by integrating computers and other technology in the various stages of civil litigation—from the discovery of electronically stored information (ESI), to technology assisted review (TAR) of documents, to the effective use of courtroom presentation software.
