When I was growing up on a farm in South Carolina in the '60s, the South was still segregated. Even as a young child, I sensed that there was something wrong with this. And my feelings were confirmed after watching the movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, in which a small town lawyer, Atticus Finch, defends a black man against a false criminal charge. Atticus stands up to racism and defends the rule of law - at great personal and professional sacrifice. While Atticus was a noble man, he was a movie character. Fortunately, I had a role model in real life, my father, who treated every person with dignity and respect. My father served in the U.S. Army where he met a Japanese woman who worked for the U.S. Army in Tokyo. She and my father married and had four children.

I played football, basketball, and baseball in high school and football at Clemson University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and then I went to the University of South Carolina Law School where I graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1986. I really enjoyed law school - with its expectation (requirement) that you be prepared in class, vigorously defend your positions and advocate your case. I was introduced to rock climbing during law school, and I became infatuated with it. After practicing law in a small general practice law firm for three years, I moved to Colorado in 1989 so I could rock climb every day. A few years later I climbed El Capitan in Yosemite National Park - the high point of my climbing career.

Fort Collins has been my home since 1991. It was, and is, a great place to raise a family. My wife and I enjoyed outdoor sports, cultural events, and raising our two sons. I enjoyed coaching soccer for my kids' teams and later going to their high school soccer games and swim meets. They went off to college, graduated, and are now making their way in the world. They are incredible young men.

I worked for an insurance defense law firm for 3 ? years and gained valuable experience and insight into the defense side. Since then, I have worked strictly for plaintiffs in personal injury litigation. I have worked for the largest plaintiff's injury law firm in Colorado, for small-medium sized firms, and now in solo practice.

Professional development is important, so I have been active in professional organizations: Colorado Bar Association, South Carolina Bar, U.S. District Court of Colorado Bar, U.S. District Court of South Carolina Bar, Larimer County Bar Association, Colorado Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA). Being somewhat of an academic, I have been active in writing articles for CTLA's Trial Talk magazine, two chapters in CTLA's Auto Litigation Handbook, as well as presenting at seminars for CTLA and the Colorado Bar Association. I also enjoy creative writing, and I have had articles, stories, and poetry published.

There are peaks and valleys in life. I was divorced a few years ago, but I am now married to a wonderful woman and I look forward to the unfolding of the rest of our lives together. As long as I stay true to my principles and values, which is my vow, I will be able to live with love and honor as a man, as my father did, and as an attorney like Atticus Finch who put his client and the rule of law first.
