Sonya is the Founder and Managing Attorney of Tien Law Firm, PC. Ivy-league educated and BigLaw-trained, with personal injury, corporate, real estate, litigation, and immigration experience, Sonya has built a unique practice focusing on representing individuals and companies in pre-litigation claims, transactional matters, and litigation.

Sonya received her law degree from Columbia University, where she was recognized as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Ms. Tien received her business degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School, along with seventeen undergraduate scholarships.

Sonya is battle-tested in proceedings in federal and state courts, with dispositive motions, settlement negotiations, discovery, depositions, and hearings. In 2013, Sonya was a member of a trial team that won summary judgment in the Eastern District of New York, which was a precedent-setting landmark decision that received widespread media attention.

Sonya Tien has litigation and transactional experience, has appeared in more than 20 federal and state courts, and has negotiation hundreds of favorable settlements for her for her clients. Her practice is focused on providing results-oriented legal services.

Before founding Tien Law Firm, Ms. Tien practiced law at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, LLP’s New York office with a focus on corporate transactions, corporate compliance, SEC enforcement, commercial real estate, and commercial litigation, and co-authored the firm’s monthly White Collar Criminal Defense and Securities Enforcement Memorandum circulated to domestic and international offices.

Sonya has been a key member of plaintiff and defense teams for a many companies, having won dismissals, summary judgments, and favorable settlements in litigations for personal injury plaintiffs, domestic companies, public companies, private companies, and multinational companies, such as, Goldman Sachs, Goldman Sachs (ASIA), CBRE, Catalent Pharama Solutions, JP Morgan Chase, Barclays Capital Inc, and more.

Since 2020 Sonya has been recognized by Thompson Reuters’ Super Lawyers as a Rising Star, and has received a perfect 10 out of 10 rating on Avvo for the past eight years. Sonya can assist clients who need strong litigation and transactional skills on a wide range of cases including, personal injury matters, real estate litigation and transactions, M&A litigation and transactions, civil rights litigation, white collar criminal defense, and pharmaceutical and IP litigation.

Sonya has helped clients navigate the SEC, FDA, and DOJ in federal investigations and litigation matters. Her clients have included multinational companies, public and private companies, and individuals from diverse industries including pharmaceuticals, media & entertainment, and financial services. Sonya also advises on corporate compliance and internal control programs.

Sonya completed an internship with the Chambers of the Honorable George H. Lowe, United States Magistrate Judge for the Northern District Court for the District of New York, where she gained valuable judicial and litigation experience. Sonya’s work has been published by The Wall Street Lawyer and Practicing Law Institute. She has also lectured at industry events on topics of executive compensation and SEC regulation.
