Senior Counsel
David Rangaviz is Senior Counsel in the firm’s criminal defense and civil rights practice. He brings more than a decade of experience investigating, litigating, and teaching cutting-edge issues at the intersection of civil rights, criminal law, policing, and government accountability.
Before entering private practice, Attorney Rangaviz served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, where he investigated and litigated civil rights cases on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. His work spanned systemic police-misconduct investigations, school-based policing and student-rights matters, corrections conditions and disability-rights enforcement, Title VI and ADA investigations, and complex matters involving state–federal conflicts in immigration enforcement.
Attorney Rangaviz previously practiced in the Public Defender Division Appeals Unit at the Committee for Public Counsel Services, where he briefed and argued post-conviction matters before the Superior Court, the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and the Supreme Judicial Court. In this position, Attorney Rangaviz litigated cases involving complex suppression issues and civil rights–adjacent issues of first impression, including digital-privacy questions, racial-profiling claims, decarceration during the COVID-19 pandemic, and GPS-monitoring challenges. While serving in this position, Attorney Rangaviz also served on the Board of Directors and as co-chair of the Amicus Committee for the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where he solicited, edited, and drafted amicus briefs in cases of first impression at the Supreme Judicial Court. His early career included trial-level public defense in Maryland, where he tried dozens of cases to verdict—from misdemeanor offenses to attempted-murder charges, and was named the district’s Public Defender of the Year award for his advocacy. Attorney Rangaviz has also served as a law clerk for three federal and state judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
In addition to his litigation practice, Attorney Rangaviz has also taught Criminal Procedure as an Adjunct Professor at Boston College Law School, where he was named the school’s 2025 Adjunct Professor of the Year. He has also designed and delivered trainings for the Social Law Library, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Boston Bar Association, among other organizations. Attorney Rangaviz also writes frequently on civil rights, constitutional law, and criminal-legal reform, with publications in the American Criminal Law Review, Boston College Law Review, Boston Bar Journal, Massachusetts Law Review, Inquest, and others.
Attorney Rangaviz’s professional service includes serving as a Hearing Officer for the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers; a Board Member of Project Citizenship; a co-chair of the Boston Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section; and a member of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Roundtable on Racial Disparities in Massachusetts Criminal Courts.
Attorney Rangaviz is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Brown University, and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the First Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
