Jacob R. Smets is an Arizona native. Originally from the Phoenix area, he attended undergraduate at Northern Arizona University (NAU) and played hockey for the Ice Jacks.
After graduating early from NAU and taking a semester to work in sales and technology in Phoenix, Jake then attended the University of South Dakota School of Law (USD) in Vermillion, South Dakota, graduating in 2018. Throughout law school, Jacob was active in numerous extracurricular activities, including: Trial Team, Environmental Law Society Committee, Habitat for Humanity house building, Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) – Iowa, RD HURD Family Law Practicum, Veteran’s Legal Education Group, while also completing the Veteran’s Black Hills 14th Annual Marathon and working multiple jobs.
After graduation, he was able to return to Flagstaff, getting a job working as a criminal defense attorney with Glazer Hammond, PLLC, which has now grown into Glazer, Hammond & Smets PLLC. Jacob keeps himself busy out of office as well. Currently, he is the head coach and limited general manager with the NAU Ice Hockey team, while also playing hockey in his own league and regularly engaging in Spartan Races throughout the United States. Jacob is a member of the Arizona State Bar, the Coconino County Bar Association, the Federal District Court of Arizona, and is a board member of multiple non-profit organizations.
