Mike is a nationally recognized federal criminal defense lawyer who has successfully tried cases to jury verdict in Illinois and across the country. He is known for his aggressive cross-examinations and creative and compelling closing arguments.
He is the only practicing attorney in the country who has obtained seven different complete not guilty jury verdicts (every Count charged) in federal criminal prosecutions in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago). Mike most recently obtained a complete not guilty verdict in January 2023 after a two-week federal Medicare fraud trial in which the Government charged his client with conspiracy and and a number of other counts of violations of the Federal Anti-Kickback statute. In 2022, Mike was able to obtain the dismissal of all charges against his clients in two separate federal criminal prosecutions. prior to trial.
Mike has attained similar success in civil jury trials, in Illinois and across the country, including in civil rights, securities, whistleblower, employment, and commercial trials. He regularly speaks, and writes about, the art and science of cross-examination. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in Trial Practice at Northwestern Pritzker's School of Law.
