C. Arthur “Brother” Rutter III is the Managing Partner of Rutter Mills LLP, a leading personal injury law firm serving Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. A graduate of Harvard College, he earned his law degree from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law, where he graduated first in his class and later served as an Adjunct Professor of Law.
Brother Rutter is a seasoned trial attorney with decades of experience handling high-stakes personal injury litigation, including complex automobile, catastrophic injury, and maritime cases. He has secured multiple multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements across several states, including the largest wrongful death verdict in Virginia history at the time, and most recently served as lead counsel on a $3.75 million seaman’s injury settlement.
In addition to his litigation practice, Brother Rutter is a mentor to attorneys within the firm and a trusted resource for clients navigating complex legal matters. He is licensed to practice in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida.
Outside the courtroom, Brother is deeply involved in philanthropy, particularly in support of education and the arts. He and his wife, Meredith, founded The Rutter Family Art Foundation, which supports local and regional artists through exhibitions, programming, and gallery space in a historic 1917 building central to Norfolk’s emerging arts district.
