Starting as early as 1995, Ruiz filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of more than 30,000 Miami-Dade County residents against the Florida Department of Agriculture for trespassing onto the private properties of homeowners and chopping down their citrus trees without any compensation. The case was ultimately certified and the Department of Agriculture directly compensated all members of the aggrieved class.

Thereafter, Ruiz launched an aggressive class action offensive involving approximately 143 different types of class actions. These class actions resulted in some of the largest awards in Florida against major insurance companies such as All State, Progressive, State Farm, and Geico.

In 2001, Ruiz represented frustrated consumers in a class action against Firestone for poorly designed and manufactured tires that resulted in 63 fatalities and thousands of serious blowouts. Four years later, Ruiz represented crash victims’ families in a wrongful death action against Chalk’s International Ocean Airway. Ruiz was the first lawyer to file a limited fund class action. The case settled within an unprecedented 60 days for a confidentially agreed amount.

Ruiz is the founder of MSP Recovery Law Firm, one of the top litigation law firms in the country known for its strengthen in managed care and class action litigation. On February 2, 2017 , in a 100-plus page decision, Judge Samantha Ruiz-Cohen of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit certified a class-action against Ocean Harbor under the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) Act (MSP Recovery, LLC v. Ocean Harbor Casualty Insurance, No. 2015-1946). Ruiz brought what became the first ever certified class-action suit to address an automobile insurers failure to pay medical bills it was legally required to pay.

This is one of more than a dozen cases brought by Ruiz in state and federal court challenging the failure of no-fault automobile insurers to reimburse Medicare Advantage Organizations (MAOs) for medical bills it had a demonstrated responsibility to cover.

 On April 20, 2017, Ruiz made history again obtaining the second-class certification against IDS Insurance Company (MSPA Claims 1, LLC v. IDS Property Casualty Insurance, No. 2015-27940). The Honorable Judge Antonio Arzola of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit certified claims from MAO’s that seek reimbursement from the auto insurer for failing to pay as required by their contract of insurance and the law.

When not in the courtroom, Ruiz is actively involved in multiple Bar Associations. Among his many civic undertakings are his commitments to the Guardian Ad Litem program, in addition to his financial support of numerous charities.

Mr. Ruiz resides in the Miami, Fl area with his wife of 25 years Mayra and three children John, Cristina, and Alex.
