As both an appeals lawyer and a trial lawyer who has worked countless criminal cases, I've learned a lot about our justice system.

One thing I see over and over again is this: if you're accused of a crime, regardless of whether you are innocent or guilty, your reputation and way of life could be changed forever.

Very few people know what it's like to have the government accuse you of doing something wrong unless you've been through it. From the professional, to the student, to man on the street, I've been through it with my clients many times. Too often I've seen good people's lives under attack by false allegations or an unfair process.

What you need is a champion, someone who will passionately advocate for you and tell your side of the story.

That's why I became a lawyer.

In Louisiana they say that there are two kinds of people, preachers and storytellers. As a former reporter and writer who grew up here, I consider myself a storyteller.

I am a storyteller who digs deep to find all of the pieces of the puzzle, all of the inconsistencies in an allegation, and all of those important details that could have been missed. Then I use those things to find and tell the truth.

Because the reality is that behind every successful case is a massive amount of preparation and hard work - preparation and research that is time consuming and tedious but absolutely vital to your case's success.

Another reality?

Many lawyers choose to skip this step.

Instead, they depend solely upon the power of personality to try and win the case.

In my experience, this method is woefully inadequate, irresponsible, and at worst, off putting to judges and juries.

The details matter.

They matter because your freedom and your reputation can depend on them.
