He graduated from Rutgers University with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice. Mr. Erwin began his legal career at Rutgers School of Law. His potential was recognized early when he was accepted into the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project fellowship. Separately, he engaged in grassroots organizing by creating a community gardening initiative whose purpose was to assist low-income residents in Camden, New Jersey. This initiative was recognized by National Jurist Magazine in 2011. He also interned with Hon. Noel L. Hillman of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He graduated in 2012.

Upon graduation, Stefan clerked with the Hon. James Hely in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division. While working in the Judiciary he was appointed by the Supreme Court as a court appointed mediator. He then chose the path of the Public Defender. In this position he was initially assigned to the Special Hearings Unit as a managing attorney. There, he was one of four attorneys, acting state-wide, engaged in representing low-income individuals in post-conviction civil proceedings. The unit emphasized vertical defense, focusing on representing clients from case inception through all levels of court including Appellate and Agency practice. There, he became an expert in Megan’s Law and Community/Parole Supervision for Life.

Later, he transferred to the Monmouth County Trial Unit, where he engaged in criminal defense for individuals charged with serious felonies such as murder, aggravated assault, white collar crime, sexual assault, child pornography, arson, theft, distribution, possession, and violations of probation. Never afraid to file a motion or interlocutory appeal, Mr. Erwin is proficient in dismissing cases through pre-trial proceedings and regularly contests searches, statements and indictments. At trial, Mr. Erwin is an emotional and moving orator whose passionate arguments have swayed the jury in a variety of cases.

After leaving the public sector, Mr. Erwin worked for large private law firms and public officials in the North Jersey area. He initially gained significant experience representing New Jersey’s largest cities such as Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, and East Orange.

In this position, he honed his skills through complex litigation in cases concerning civil liberties and civil rights, police misconduct and employment law. He thereafter elevated his skills at a firm that specialized in commercial litigation. Finally, Mr. Erwin gained an expertise in business formations, development and organization as a C-level executive for a multi-state cannabis operator.

Stefan Erwin loves the law and the constitution. As a principled advocate, he has chosen to affect change in the community by acting as a Prosecutor for Union Township in New Jersey. In this position, he effectuates justice by prosecuting DUI’s, motor vehicle violations, criminal actions, and property crimes. Mr. Erwin also sits as an arbitrator for the Supreme Court Ethics Committee, District XII and is a member of several legal organizations such as the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
