Legendary Lawyer Rex Houston Honored at NTL Summit

Legendary Henderson attorney Rex Houston made his name representing the working men and women of East Texas in landmark cases involving workers compensation, personal injury and product liability claims. He was recognized for his accomplishments at The National Trial Lawyers Summit.

Rex Houston died at age on October 25, 2006, at his residence in Henderson.

He was born May 10, 1926, in Oil City, Louisiana. His family moved to East Texas in 1931, after the discovery of oil, and he had been a resident of East Texas, specifically Rusk County, since that time. He attended Baylor University and received an LLB degree in 1950, and was subsequently awarded a J.D., juris doctorate, by Baylor University.

Houston entered the private practice of law in Henderson in 1950, where he he was one of the founding members of the Wellborn and Houston law firm. His practice had consisted almost exclusively of a trial practice where he had handled both civil and criminal cases. He had appeared as trial counsel in hundreds of cases all over the state of Texas and outside Texas in a number of other states.

Mr. Houston served for several years as director of Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and he was co-founder and first president of East Texas Trial Lawyers Association. He was active in both organizations as well as the American Trial Lawyers Association and the local bar association in Rusk County. He was inducted into and named a Fellow of International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1976. In 1992, he was named Baylor Lawyer of the Year.

He had appeared as a lecturer at various legal seminars and had been called as an expert witness in both federal and state courts in Texas.
