NY State Reaches $5.5M Settlement with Man Wrongfully Convicted of Rape

The attorney for Anthony Broadwater confirmed Tuesday that New York State has reached a settlement with the wrongfully convicted suspect in a 1981 rape case.

The state will be paying Broadwater $5.5 million for his wrongful conviction in the rape of Alice Sebold that occured on the Syracuse University campus in 1981.

Broadwater, 62, spent over 16 years in state prison by the time he was released in 1998. For almost 20 years, he had been subject to a lifetime of supervision as a level-2 sex offender — leaving him unable to find work.
