A Jackson County jury cleared a skilled nursing home in the death of a patient from a pressure ulcer, despite a request that they award $25 million against the facility and its owner.
While at the Timberlake Care Center in 2019, Geneva Miller developed a buttock pressure ulcer that became infected, leading to fatal sepsis. In their suit, her granddaughters alleged nursing staff failed to take steps to prevent the development of an avoidable wound.
Jonathan Steele of Steele Chaffee, who represented the plaintiffs, said he sought the large amount of aggravating circumstances damages due to “egregious corporate conduct” by the facility’s parent company, Health Systems Inc. The suit alleged the facility had begged for enough staff to cover days when employees failed to show up for work.
